What changed this month

The calf market gave back a big piece of the spring rally: 500–600 lb steers averaged $421.89 at Tulsa in Aug 2026, down $32/cwt from Jul 2026 and $80 below the Feb 2026 peak, with early-Sep OKC sales near $378. A flash drought took the region from 2% to 78% in severe drought in four weeks, and Oklahoma pasture rated poor or very poor jumped to 69% against 11% a year ago. Costs moved the wrong way too — diesel is $5.95, up +58% on the year — while hay stocks came into summer +60% above the five-year average, the one cushion under all of this.
